Live To Die

Went to watch Corpse Bride yesterday night, about time I must say. The movie is pure Burton sweetness. An awesome mix of macabre poetry and naive romance. The plot is nothing really deep probably best put as simplistically elaborated yet complex in a childish kind of way, and that is the true beauty of it. The animation is clearly in a league of it’s own, but what really makes the movie stand out is the atmosphere, the mood so typical to Burton.
Without a doubt it takes inspiration in Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Everything flows together so nicely it’s almost insane. From the characters designs to the dark world of the living (as opposed to the ‘underworld’ which is bright and colourful) every little thing screams ‘attention to details’.
It may not be the most intellectual movie out there and if you criticise it for not being more than a innocent tale so wonderfully animated then I think you missed the whole point. Much like a warm July night with clear sky, stars and a full moon, sometimes beauty does not need to be more than what it is.
